Delray Beach's Water, From a Commercial Point of View
Delray Beach Utilities runs its own treatment plant and supplies the city plus the Town of Gulf Stream. Raw water comes from 30 wells in the shallow East Coast Surficial Aquifer; at the plant it is aerated, softened with lime in a clarifier (which also takes out color and iron), filtered, and disinfected with chloramine. Two neighbors that people assume are on the same water are not: Highland Beach runs its own reverse osmosis plant on Floridan Aquifer wells, and most unincorporated addresses west of the city, including Kings Point and the Delray Marketplace area, are in the Palm Beach County Water Utilities service area. The first thing we check on a Delray Beach commercial job is which of those three supplies the building.
"Meets standards" and "right for commercial equipment" are two different questions. Ice machines, combi ovens, boilers, sterilizers, espresso equipment, and wash-down systems are far more sensitive to residual hardness, disinfectant residual, and dissolved solids than a kitchen tap. Delray also has an unusually wide spread of building ages — a 1960s Atlantic Avenue storefront and a new Congress Avenue facility can receive the same city water and still present very different water at the point of use, because the interior plumbing in between is not the same.

Highland Beach buildings are a different case. Their water is reverse osmosis permeate from the Town's own plant, with hardness and alkalinity added back afterward. It usually needs less softening, but it gets its own on-site test rather than Delray's numbers. Properties in the county utility area get tested the same way. If you are not sure which utility you are on, the name on your water bill tells you.
Delray Beach's New Water Plant (Due Early 2028): Size Equipment for Both Waters
The lime-softening plant that supplies the city today has been in service for more than seven decades. Delray Beach broke ground on its replacement in early 2026, with completion expected by early 2028. The City has reported that the new plant will be a full nanofiltration (membrane) process, not the lime-plus-membrane hybrid first planned.
For a business, that means the water your equipment sees will change during the life of anything you install now. Membrane-treated water is normally lower in hardness and dissolved solids than lime-softened water, and disinfection will continue. So we set up Delray Beach commercial systems in a way that holds up through the switch:
- Softeners with adjustable regeneration (metered, not timer-based), so salt use and regeneration frequency can come down when incoming hardness drops, with no new equipment needed.
