West of the turnpike, wells are how people get water at all. The Acreage, Loxahatchee, Loxahatchee Groves and parts of western Wellington have little or no municipal service, so a private well is the household supply — drinking, bathing, laundry, everything. That water has to be potable, and out here it almost never starts that way: dissolved iron, hydrogen sulfide and hardness are the rule rather than the exception.

Closer in, wells exist for a completely different reason: irrigation. Homes on city water with large lots put in a shallow irrigation well so they are not paying utility rates to water grass. That well does not need to be potable, does not need drinking water treatment, and costs considerably less.

These two jobs get confused constantly, and the confusion is expensive in both directions — people pay for potable construction they do not need, or they end up drinking from a well that was never built for it. The first question we ask is which one you actually want.
