What We Test — and Why It Matters
Palm Beach County water has specific challenges. Our free water test covers the seven contaminants most likely to affect your home, your appliances, and your family's health.
Hardness (GPG/PPM)
There is no single Palm Beach County hardness number. Most local utilities lime-soften or membrane-treat their water and do not publish hardness — Boca Raton is the exception, at 65–80 mg/L in its 2025 report. We measure hardness at your tap and report it in grains per gallon and ppm. On the USGS scale, anything above 120 mg/L counts as hard.
Chlorine & Chloramines
Nearly every utility here disinfects with chloramine — West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County Water Utilities, Wellington, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth Beach, Seacoast and Jupiter all report it, with 2025 running averages of about 2.8–3.7 mg/L. Chloramine is harder to remove than plain chlorine; catalytic carbon handles it far better than a standard carbon filter.
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
TDS measures the total concentration of dissolved minerals and contaminants. High TDS correlates with scale buildup and altered taste.
Iron & Manganese
Most homes in The Acreage and Loxahatchee are on private wells, and well water can carry iron and manganese that treated city water does not. Iron is the usual cause of orange rust stains on fixtures and laundry; manganese leaves black or brown stains.
pH Level
Acidic water (low pH) corrodes copper pipes and fixtures. Alkaline water accelerates scale formation. We test and report your exact pH.
Hydrogen Sulfide (Rotten Egg Smell)
A rotten-egg smell usually means hydrogen sulfide, most often from a private well. The World Health Organization puts the smell threshold at about 0.05–0.1 mg/L, so you can notice it at very low levels. We test on-site and recommend the right removal system.
Bacteria (Coliform)
Required for all well water systems. Coliform bacteria are invisible, odorless, and undetectable without laboratory-grade testing. We include this at no charge.
What Your Utility Report Tells You — and What It Doesn't
Palm Beach County does not have one water system. At least nine different utilities serve the county's cities, and each one treats its water differently. Some lime-soften, some use nanofiltration or reverse osmosis, and many blend more than one. Thousands of homes west of State Road 7 are on private wells with no utility at all. That is why two houses a few miles apart can test completely differently.
Every utility publishes an annual water quality report (a Consumer Confidence Report). It is worth reading. It shows the disinfectant level, disinfection byproducts, lead and copper results and, at more and more utilities, PFAS. But it describes water leaving the plant and at sample points in the system, not water coming out of your faucet. Most of these reports do not list hardness at all. And they say nothing about your water heater, your old softener, or a filter that ran out years ago. PFAS can only be measured by a certified lab, so the utility report is the free place to check it.
