Reverse Osmosis on Jupiter Town Water: What the 2025 Water Quality Report Shows

The Town's 2025 Annual Water Quality Report says the water met every state and federal standard, based on more than 7,000 tests across more than 100 contaminants. Here is what it lists and what each figure means for a drinking-water system:

• Chloramine: highest running annual average 2.99 ppm, with individual samples from 0.6 to 4.4 ppm. The limit applies to the annual average (4.0 ppm), so a single tap can briefly read higher. Chloramine is what you taste in coffee and ice, and it is the first job for any Jupiter filter.
• Disinfection by-products: total trihalomethanes (TTHM) 1.58 ppb (range 0 to 3.0) and haloacetic acids (HAA5) 4.82 ppb (range 0 to 18.0), against limits of 80 and 60 ppb. Those are some of the lowest figures we have seen in any Palm Beach County report, which is what membrane treatment of the source water does.
• Lead and copper: the most recent round (August 2024) found a 90th-percentile lead level of 0.995 ppb and copper of 0.329 ppm, with no sites over the action level. A 2024 inventory of every service line, including the customer side, found no lead service lines in the Town's system. Any lead at a Jupiter tap would come from the home's own fixtures or solder.
• PFAS: the Town says its historical PFAS sampling has come back below the test method's minimum reporting limit for every compound tested, and credits its RO and nanofiltration membranes. Its 2025 supply plan says it will retire the small ion exchange plant and add another nanofiltration train as part of its strategy for the new federal PFAS rules.
• Sodium and fluoride: sodium 46.8 ppm and fluoride 0.088 ppm (2023 sampling). The Town does not add fluoride, so an RO system removing fluoride is not a trade-off here.
• Radon: detected in one of four treated-water samples in 2025, with a maximum of 9.9 pCi/L. There is no federal drinking-water standard for radon; the Town refers residents with concerns to the EPA radon hotline, 800-SOS-RADON.

So on Jupiter town water, an under-sink reverse osmosis system is mainly about taste, chloramine and household plumbing rather than anything the plant failed to remove. The carbon stages take out chloramine; the membrane removes most remaining sodium and dissolved solids plus any lead picked up from older fixtures. Do Jupiter Homes on Town Water Need a Water Softener?

Often less than you have been told. Nanofiltration is a membrane softening process, and reverse osmosis removes nearly all hardness from the brackish water it treats, so a large share of the calcium and magnesium is removed at the plant before blending. The Town does not publish a hardness figure in its 2025 report, so any company quoting you a specific Jupiter city hardness number is guessing. We measure it at your tap.

• When a softener still makes sense: a tankless water heater, a home with a history of scale on fixtures, or a test result that shows enough hardness to matter for your appliances.
• When it usually does not: a home where the main complaints are taste, smell and spotting on glass. Whole-house catalytic carbon plus RO at the kitchen tends to solve those without salt.
• If you already own one: many Jupiter softeners were installed by previous owners and are programmed for much harder water than the Town delivers. We re-program, repair or remove them, and tell you honestly which one it is.

Jupiter Farms Well Water: What We Test and What We Install

Jupiter Farms homes draw from private wells into the shallow surficial aquifer, so the Town's water report does not apply to you at all. Iron staining and a rotten-egg (hydrogen sulfide) smell are the two complaints we hear most, and one of our Jupiter Farms reviews describes exactly that: a well with iron and sulfur problems solved with a multi-stage system. Two neighboring wells can still test very differently, so we never quote a well system without testing yours first.

1. Test on site: iron, hydrogen sulfide, hardness, pH and total dissolved solids, plus a look at your pressure tank and existing equipment.
2. Oxidize and filter iron and sulfur first: an air-injection (AirGuard) oxidizing filter ahead of everything else. A softener installed alone on iron-heavy water fouls and fails.
3. Soften if the hardness calls for it: sized to your household and measured hardness, after the iron is handled.
4. Finish at the kitchen: an under-sink RO for drinking and cooking water.
5. Bacteria: if a test or a recent flood raises the question, we add disinfection to the plan. Private wells are not covered by any utility's monitoring, so testing is the owner's job.

Hydrant Flushing, Pipe Work and Your Filters

The Town maintains 480 miles of water main and 3,874 hydrants, and it asks residents to report discolored water or hydrant leaks to the Utilities emergency line (561-741-2609 after hours, 561-741-2300 during business hours). Its water report notes that brown or yellow water that keeps coming back is usually rust from old galvanized pipe inside the home, not the town supply.

• After any flushing or main work nearby, run an unfiltered tap until the water clears before using the RO or doing laundry.
• If whole-house pressure or RO output drops in the weeks afterward, change the sediment pre-filter first.
• Recurring discoloration in only your house points to galvanized pipe or a water heater that needs flushing. A filter can hide it, but the plumbing is the real fix.
