Which Drinking Water System Do You Actually Need?

There are four realistic ways to get better drinking water in a Palm Beach County kitchen, and they are not interchangeable. This page compares them honestly so you can tell which one fits before anyone quotes you. 1. A pitcher or faucet-mount filter. Cost is low and it improves chlorine taste. It does not remove dissolved solids, sodium, chlorate, lead, arsenic, fluoride or PFAS, the cartridge life on chloraminated South Florida water is short, and it gives you nothing at the ice maker. Reasonable as a stopgap in a rental, not a solution for a household that is buying cases of bottled water.

2. An under-sink carbon block filter. A dedicated cartridge and faucet under the sink, no drain line, no storage tank, no wastewater. Very good on chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor, and it is the right answer when a water test shows the taste complaint is chemical rather than mineral. It still does not remove dissolved solids, which is the difference people usually do not learn until after they buy one.

3. An under-sink reverse osmosis system. Multi-stage: sediment and catalytic carbon prefilters, a semi-permeable membrane that rejects roughly 98% of total dissolved solids, a pressurized storage tank and a post-filter for polish. This is the only one of the four that addresses dissolved contaminants — lead picked up from older household plumbing, arsenic, nitrates, fluoride, chlorate, the sodium a softener adds back, and PFAS. It needs a drain connection and produces some reject water.

4. Whole-home filtration plus a drinking water stage. A backwashing carbon tank and softener at the point of entry handle shower, laundry and fixture water, then a small RO or carbon unit finishes drinking water at the kitchen tap. Most of the homes we treat in Palm Beach County end up here, because scale and chlorine are house-wide problems while dissolved solids are a drinking-water problem.

How We Pick Between Them — The Numbers We Test For

The choice comes out of four measurements a technician takes at your own tap during the free water test, not from a county average.

Hardness in grains per gallon tells us whether the complaint is scale. Inside the West Palm Beach city limits hardness typically runs 150 to 200 ppm; Boca Raton and Delray Beach sit at the top of the hard range; Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee and The Acreage commonly read 180 to 250 ppm or more. Hardness is a softener problem — no drinking water system solves it, and high hardness feeding an RO membrane shortens its life.

Chlorine or chloramine residual tells us how much carbon contact time the house needs. The City of West Palm Beach 2025 water quality report logged chloramine averaging 3.21 ppm across the year, and chloramine is much harder to strip than free chlorine, so a token cartridge fades by month three or four while a properly sized catalytic carbon bed does not.

Total dissolved solids decides whether carbon alone is enough. The same City report put TDS at 243 ppm. If your objection is what is dissolved in the water rather than how it tastes, carbon cannot help and a membrane is the honest recommendation. On a healthy residential RO system fed by that water, permeate should be in the low tens of ppm — measuring feed versus permeate is how we grade any existing system.

Iron, sulfur and pH matter on private wells in the western communities. Maintenance, Bottled Water Math and What Goes Wrong

Every drinking water system is a maintenance schedule, and the schedule is what people underestimate. On Palm Beach County water, expect sediment and carbon prefilters every 6 to 12 months, an RO membrane every 2 to 4 years, and a post-filter annually. Carbon block units under the sink are usually a single annual cartridge. Hardware-store cartridge filters plumbed into the main line are the outlier — chloramine and sediment loads here exhaust them every two to three months, which is why we do not install them.

Skipping the prefilter is the single most expensive mistake. Chlorine or chloramine passing a spent carbon prefilter destroys a thin-film composite membrane, so a missed cartridge turns a modest service item into a membrane replacement. The second most common issue is not a filter at all: a waterlogged bladder tank, which produces the exact complaint we hear most — "my drinking water is slow" — and is a fifteen-minute pressure recharge rather than a new system.

The bottled water comparison is the reason most households finally move. A family buying two or three cases a week is spending real money every year for water that is already treated and trucked; a dedicated under-sink system delivers it at the tap for the cost of cartridges.
